Changes to the Rules: Chapter Five
What chapter four lacked in length of rules changes chapter five has more than made up for. Most of the changes are fairly simple rewords, and I don't see too many of them having a practical impact on the way we quiz. Again, note that the page numbers have changed from the old rules because of the copyright notice, among other things.

Two Part Reference Question, #4

This rule was simply reworded.

Two Part Reference Question, #5
"separate" omitted

Quotation Question
(see Glossary for the definition of a perfect quotation.)

The reference to the Glossary is added to provide clarification.

Page 28
Quotation Question, #10

Another simple reword.

Quotation Question, #11
Replaced "primary/secondary" with "marked"

Quotation Completion Question
A simple reword and added (see Glossary for the definition of a perfect quotation.)

Quotation Completion Question, #8

Another simple reword.

Quotation Completion Question, #9
Replaced "primary/secondary" with "marked"

Essence Question
(not necessarily a perfect quotation)

A slight reword of the parenthetical statement. Interestingly, the old rule simply said "not perfectly," which could have been interpreted as making an Essence Question incorrect if you quoted it perfectly.

Essence Completion Question
(not necessarily a perfect quotation)

Same change as above.

Page 29
Essence Completion Question, #2

Another simple reword.

Scripture Text Question
that requires the answer(s) to be associated with the Scripture text given

I'm not certain of the purpose for this addition, as I can't come up with a way that this offers a different interpretation or a clarification of the existing rule. If anyone has an idea about how to write an STQ in such a way as to have an answer that isn't associated with the text given, please clue me in.

Statement and Question
The required answer must be based on both the statement and the question.

Yet another sentence that seems to have been added for clarification, though again I'm not certain how this makes it more clear than the previous rule.

Page 30
Application Question

I won't place the entire rule here, as it is the same rules we've had for the past two years, though now they are part of the Rule Book. I will point out one issue that has always existed with these questions. Because the rule requires two Application Questions per set at the league level, there is no rule addressing what happens if the question is voided for some reason (misread, help, hindrance, etc.). The league sets have never been equipped with substitute Application Questions.

Give a Complete Answer, et al, #2

Another simple reword.

Page 31
Introductory Remarks Related to Location

From the Untitled Section(s) (e.g., From the untitled section of Galatians.) & From the Section(s)/Untitled Section(s) of Book(s) and/or Chapter(s) Title(d) (e.g., From the section of Matthew Chapter 5 titled 'Divorce.')

An added clarification covering untitled sections, of which we have two in the upcoming season. There was a separate rule covering these which has been omitted, as it is unnecessary with the new additions.

The Use of Pronouns
person, place or thing

A welcome clarification that dovetails with the rules about completing questions, this now makes it clear that pronouns can replace any noun rather than only proper nouns.

Page 32
The Use of Section Titles, #1

or untitled sections

Adding this to make clear that untitled sections are allowed to be used in Introductory Remarks.

Special Requirements for Answers, Requiring Phrases Interjected by the Author, #1
or any spoken words including 'give all the words of _____,'

This has received some attention, and it's worth noting. The rules have always allowed authorial interjections for conversations, but this rule allows these for "words of" answers as well. Fundamentally, this is a pretty large shift, as it allows answers for a "words of" question that aren't actually words of that person.

Special Requirements for Answers, Requiring Phrases Interjected by the Author, #3
A quizzer is not allowed to include the interjections in their answer.

Another addition for clarification.

Requiring References as Answers, #3

Another simple reword.

Page 33
Requiring Fewer Answers than Exist in the Text, #2 and #3

Both have some pretty major rewording, but the rules themselves mean exactly the same thing as before.

Requiring Individuals and Geographical Locations, #1 and #2

Both have slight rewordings for clarification

Requiring Questions, Exclamations, Parenthetical Statements and Old Testament Scriptures, #1
Omitted "in and of themselves" and added "even if the answer(s) cover multiple verses"

Neither of these changes affect the application of the rules, but are helpful clarifications, and allow #6 in the old Rule Book to be omitted.

Page 34
Requiring Questions, Exclamations, Parenthetical Statements and Old Testament Scriptures, #4

Another reword for clarification.

Requiring Questions, Exclamations, Parenthetical Statements and Old Testament Scriptures, #5
Passages considered direct quotations from the Old Testament are underlined and listed in the official Chapter Analysis in the Scripture Portion.

A significant reword that simply makes it so the underlining of text in the Scripture is sufficient to denote an Old Testament quotation.

Requiring Questions, Exclamations, Parenthetical Statements and Old Testament Scriptures, #6 (old Rule book)

Omitted because of a change to #1 in this section.

Requiring Answers Associated with Specific Words, Phrases, or Numbers, #4
When a question uses the phrase 'one verse,' 'two verse,' etc...to identify a specific saying, sentence, question, etc...the required answer must be the entire verse(s).

This addition gives a clear directive that such question demand the whole verse or verses. This eliminates the possibility of a question demanding a two-verse item that is in truth only a verse-and-a-half.
