Bible Quiz Hall of Records
Team Records Individual Records

Below you will find various Bible Quiz Records. Comparing accomplishments from year-to-year can be quite a difficult task for several reasons, and comparisons between eras of quizzing is almost impossible for the purposes of claiming one team or one quizzer was provably better than another. Among those reasons are:

  • different amounts material to memorize from year to year
  • different question writers/styles
  • varying levels of quality of competition
  • interrupting questions was seldom done in the early years of competition
  • varying formats of competition from year to year
  • in the mid 1970's (we do not know the exact year), the rules were changed to increase the number of questions for a quiz-out from five to six
  • in 1983, the rules were changed to no longer allow college students of quizzing age to participate
  • in 2006, the rules were changed to five correct questions for a quiz-out with a 20 point bonus, with a max score of 150, resulting in the fact that it is easier to quiz out forward and there are more bonus points for quizzing out forward
  • in 2006, with only five questions for a quiz-out, four quizzers could quiz-out each round for a total of 80 bonus points, rather than 3 quiz-outs with only 30 points total, changing the maximum score for one round from 380 points to 430 points.

With this understanding, we offer comparable data by category. Just as an Olympic champion is always an Olympic champion, and historical records are kept for each event, the following Bible Quiz records are kept to retain the history of the program and to allow everyone to see all of the accomplishments. Therefore, when listing ranks for one high score (etc.) over another, we are attempting to show the progression of the program and each individual or team accomplishment. Some of these accomplishments are phenomenally better than those before them, and might happen to be the best ever if we had the ability for the 50+ champions to all play each other at the same time, over the same material, at the same age and with the same questions, which we cannot do, and therefore, cannot prove. We ask that you take them as they are, and that each new generation of quizzers use them as inspiration to drive their learning of God's word.

The following data does not contain any information from preliminary rounds at National Finals or the Challenger Division. This is not meant to exclude teams; however, it is done out of fairness to the teams that quizzed before 2000 and those from 2000 - 2006 who were Regional Champions and did not have to play in the preliminary rounds. Further, to make the comparisons as viable as possible, scores from all years have been normalized. This normalization was done because until 2005, there were 380 points available per game, counting bonus points, and it took 6 questions to quiz out. From 2006 to the present, there are 430 points available because there are 80 bonus points available and quizzers need only 5 correct questions to quiz out. The formula for normalized points is 380/430*(points). Therefore, to help with comparisons, they are made based on percentage of total obtainable points scored. Since we do not know the exact year in the 1970s in which the number of questions for a quiz-out was changed from five to six, we have assumed it was six for all relevant years. This does not effect most records as we have very little data from that time period.

Best National Finals Team Champions By Win-Loss Record Percentage

First, some explanation about the vastly differing win-loss records over the years:

  • From 1963 - 1983, only 8 teams competed for the National Championship, and from 1963 - 1965, the competition was a single-elimination event.
  • From 1966 - 1983, a full round robin of 8 teams was played.
  • In 1984 & 1985, 16 teams competed (top 2 from each region), but were divided into two groups of 8 teams, followed by a playoff between the top teams from each group.
  • From 1986 - 1991 there were 16 teams (top two from each region) competing in a full round robin.
  • In 1987 and 1992, seventeen teams (instead of 16) participated due to extenuating circumstances.
  • From 1993 - 1995, there were 20 teams competing in a full round robin, which included the top two teams from each region, as well as 4 top teams from a 3rd place tourney held on Monday.
  • In 1996, the field was increased to 24 teams (top 3 from each region); however, the third-place team from the Northwest declined to participate and was not replaced so only twenty-three teams participated.
  • From 1997 - 1999, there were 24 teams competing in a full round robin, which included the top three teams from each region.
  • From 2000 - 2006, there were 40 teams (5 from each region) competing at National Finals, with 32 teams (#2-5 from each region) competing on Monday so that the top 12 would join the Regional Champions starting Tuesday for a 20-team round robin for the National Championship, while the remaining 20 teams competed in what is called the "Challenger Bracket," which ultimate comprises teams in 21st through 40th place at National Finals.
  • From 2007 - 2009 there were 40 teams (5 from each region) competing at National Finals, with all 40 playing in four brackets of 10 on Monday to determine the top 5 from each bracket that will comprise a top-20-team full round robin, with the remaining 20 teams competing in the "Challenger Bracket".
  • Years with an asterisk (*) were the years when 16 teams went to National Finals, but they were divided into two groups of 8, played a 7-game round robin, then moved into playoffs - for these 2 years, their percentage was based on their combined 7-game round robin performance and playoff rounds - these two years as well as 2010 are the only years which include playoff rounds because without them it is impossible to have a full picture of their win-loss record. Several years of data are missing due to the fact that official scores were announced but not available via an official printout and we have yet to find scoresheets for these years.

Ties have not been broken, but have been sorted in reverse chronological order (the exception being for undefeated teams).

Best National Finals Team Champions By Average Points Per Game

All scores with an asterisk after them have been normalized. Until 2005, there were 380 points available per game, counting bonus points. Now there are 430 points available, 80 of which are bonus points. The formula for normalized points is 380 divided by 430 times (points). Therefore, ranking is based on percentage of total points attainable. Years with an asterisk (*) next to them were normalized so that proper comparisons could be made. Years with a a double asterisk (**) were the years that had extra playoffs following the regular round robin (1984, 1985 and 2010) - for these years, their average was based solely on their regular round robin performance. Several years of data are missing due to the fact that official scores were announced but not available via an official printout and we have yet to find scoresheets for these years. In addition for some years, we do not have every round's score, but we have most of them.

Best National Finals Team Champions By Average Margin of Victory

The "winning margin" indicates the average of how many points a teams won their games by. This is the sum, over all matches, of their score minus their opponent's score. All scores with an asterisk (*) after the average indicate that there were only five questions required for a quiz-out and that 430 points per game were available to a team, compared to 380 available before 2006. Years with a double asterisk (**) were the years when 16 teams went to National Finals, but they were divided into two groups of 8, played a 7-game round robin, then moved into playoffs - for these 2 years, their winning margin was based solely on their 7-game round robin performance, although they never had to play the 8 teams from the other bracket. As both teams in both formats were able to benefit from this, the statistic is nearly unchanged, so scores have not been normalized. Only championship teams are included here. Several years of data are missing due to the fact that round-by-round scores were not archived every year.

    Playoffs for the National Championship

At the end of national finals, at least 11 times there has been a playoff for the national championship. 1984 and 1985 had an unusual format, but we have included them as well because there were playoffs after the prescribed rounds. Starting in 2010, the Championship Division plays a full round robin, followed by a sudden-death playoff format among the top 4 teams. All teams involved in the playoff are listed. The first team mentioned won first place, and so on.

Largest Margin of Victory by Games Won Between First and Second Place at National Finals

The last record measured years where the National Championship was very closely decided between multiple teams. This record is just the opposite. The gap described below is the difference between the number of wins of the first place team and second place team. Only years with a 2 or more game difference are listed. The remaining years were all won by 1 game. See the records above for details on why two teams had a negative margin.

    Perfect Games at National Finals

A perfect game indicates a team getting the highest possible score. This also means getting the highest possible number of quiz-outs. Before 2006 this number was three. From 2006 on, that number is four. For teams with only three quizzers, any match where all three quiz out, with no errors or fouls also counts as a perfect game, provided the unanswered questions are all 10s.

    300/340 Games at National Finals

For all the years that 380 was the maximum score for a single team, a game in which a team scored 300 or more points in a single match was considered a phenomenal match. This is a (mostly) complete list of how many 300+ games have occurred at National Finals. Once the maximum score for a single team was raised to 430 points in 2006, the same percentage of total score that applied to a 380 game (78.94 percent of the possible points) was applied to the new 430-point total, yielding an equally phenomenal match of 340 points. * indicates they were the national champion that year.

Teams at National Finals by State

This record tracks which states have participated in the competition for the National Championship. It does not include teams from the challenger division. If a state had two or more teams competing for the title (which is possible since expansion to 16 teams in 1984), all of them are included in the total.

National Champions That Did Not Win Regional Finals That Year

This record is to commend teams that put in the extra effort to turn things around between Regional Finals and National Finals. Six teams placed second at Regional Finals, while only Mountain View A/G, Las Vegas, NV placed third at Regional Finals. From 1963 to 1983 only regional champions competed at nationals.

Eight (or more) Consecutive National Appearances (1 Full Cycle) (championship division only)

There are many ways that this record must be approached. First, with a different number of teams allowed to attend national finals, allowing five teams to attend national finals, some previous teams would certainly have made it to nationals more years, if five were allowed to attend. No team accomplished this feat when only eight teams were allowed to attend. As displayed below, only one team is known to have won eight consecutive regional championships, from 1989 to 1996. If five teams were allowed to attend, Central A/G, Springfield, MO would have attended in 1994 and 1998 making a 16 year streak. Similarly for Bouldercrest/Decatur. This record also only takes into account whether a church had a team at national finals, ignoring if they sent multiple teams. For three teams below, multiple churches are listed. In these cases, the entire team moved to another church (in the instance of Radiant/Briagate this was a church-plant and everyone from the team the previous year moved). The asterisk for Bothell indicates that in 2002 their "second" team was in the championship division while their "first" team was in the challenger division. Chandra Porter coached the "second" team that year.

Ten (or more) National Appearances (championship division only)

All of the challenges of the previous record apply here as well. This record includes if a church sent multiple teams in one year. Several teams falling short of this due only to the championship division restriction are Fort Myers, FL, Tacoma, WA, Orlando, FL, Santa Ana, CA, Dunwoody, GA, Lexington, KY and West Lafayette, IN. Radiant also attended in 1995, but did not make it out of the third-place touranament. Also included below is the collective win-loss record for these teams.

National Finals Highest Individual Averages (Top Scorers Only)

In this case, the scores have not been altered. The reason for this is two-fold. The number of questions for a quiz-out is now 5, but the bonus points are now 20. To an extent, these factors off-set each other. Under this system, no new quizzer will ever break the record set by Kent Piacenti in 1999, however, Kent achieved his record with sixteen perfect games (160). Even under today's slighty relaxed standards, no one else has ever come close to his record. All names with an asterisk (*) after them indicate that the quizzer was a member of the national championship team that year.

Difference in Average Scores Between the Top Two Scorers at National Finals

The previous record indicates that we have only had one tie for top scorer. Ties are typically broken by quiz-outs, but this one was not. This record indicates some of the other years there was very tight competition for top scorer. In addition, a 100 point gap when there were 19 games is different than when there were 7 games. Therefore we list these by the difference in average points per game. In 1980, only 10 points per game separated the top 5 quizzers. In 1982, 8.58 points per game separated the top 3 quizzers. In 2000, 12.63 points per game separated the top 4 quizzers. All years for which we have data are included. In some years, this gap was extraordinarily high. The highest scoring quizzer is listed first for each year.

    National Finals Individual Competition Results

The individual competition began in 1986. The format has changed several times over the years. Until 1998 it was played as a double-elimination tournament. In 1999, six quizzers competed per room and the top three moved on. From 2000 on, four quizzer competed per room and the top two moved on. The challenger division has also been allowed to participate since 2000. Below are the results from each year. An asterisk indicates that their team won nationals that year.

    Highest Quiz-Out Forward Numbers/Percentage

Since 2006's change to 5 for a quiz out, this statistic is slightly skewed. Jon Galliers is the only quizzer to quiz out forward every round, however in both 1998 and 1999, Kent would've done so as well given only 5 for a quiz out.
